Raising the Standards for Building Design
The majority of residential and small buildings constructed in BC are designed by residential or building designers working in Part 9 of the BC Building Code. Professional Designers have a long history and excellent track record for providing safe, affordable, and sustainable designs, all in the interest of the public. The BC Association of Building Designers (BCABD) provides networking, support, consulting and education for the building design community to help them be their best.
Our mission is to protect the interests of the public by raising the standards for professionalism and ethics in the building design community through education, networking, and organization. BCABD along with our partners are bringing together the design and construction community to create a team approach for the benefit of all involved.
What is a Building Designer?
Building designers (or Residential Designers) are professionals who specializes in the design and planning of buildings, typically residential or commercial structures. They work closely with clients to create functional and aesthetically pleasing buildings that meet their specific needs and preferences, while also adhering to building codes and regulations.
Building designers may work on projects ranging from small home renovations to large commercial developments. They are responsible for creating detailed drawings, plans, and specifications that outline the design and construction of the building, including its layout, materials, finishes, and structural elements.
In addition to their design expertise, building designers may also have knowledge of construction methods and techniques, as well as building systems such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, and electrical.
Some building designers work independently, while others work for design firms, construction companies, or engineering firms. They may also collaborate with other professionals, such as engineers, architects, contractors, and interior designers, to ensure that the building is designed and constructed to meet the needs of the client.
Overall, building designers play a critical role in the design and construction of buildings, helping to ensure that they are functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing.
